Mabel 'Edie' Maxwell Mabel E. 'Edie' Cottrill Maxwell, 88, formerly of Wilbur, W.Va., passed away Monday, May 24, 2010 at her home in Middlebourne, W.Va. She was born May 12, 1922, in Wilbur, a daughter of the late Luther C. Keys and Addie (Ferguson) Keys. Edie was a Methodist and a member of the Fairview Church at Wilbur. She played a very active role during her many hears of attendance and was very instrumental in keeping the doors open during the "lean" years. Her career outside the home began at Kroger's, then Westinghouse Electric in Fairmont and ended at Valley View Dairyette in Deep Valley. Surviving is her husband, Charles "Ed" Maxwell; daughter, Kendra Wyke (Roger) of Middlebourne; granddaughter, Stephanie Berkhimer (Gabe) of Shinnston; two great-grandchildren, McKenna and Caleb Berkhimer; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband Kenneth Cottrill in 1970; three sisters, Letha Belle Keys, Marie Mercer and Meriam Stoneking. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at McCullough-Rogers Funeral Home, Pennsboro, with Pastor Jay Stoneking and the Rev. Earl Fletcher officiating. Interment will follow at the Wilbur Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 5-8 p.m. and until service time Thursday. Mildred Irene Doll Pennsboro- Mildred Irene Doll, 97, of Greenwood, passed away May 2, 2010, at the Salem Care and Rehab Center. She was born September 5, 1912, in Wilbur, Tyler County, WV, a daughter of the late Charles Wesley Davis and Lesie (George) Davis. Mildred owned and operated the Greenwood Lunch Restaurant for many years and was a cook at the Greenwood Grade School. She retired from the Colin Anderson Center in St. Mary's as a cook. Mrs. Doll was a member of the Greenwood Women's Club, a Ladies Aide and an Honorary Member of the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department. She was a member of the Greenwood United Methodist Church. Surviving are four children Mary Belle Doll of Greenwood, Lora Elaine Barnette of Ellicott City, MD, Charles "Bud" Doll and his wife Connie of Pennsboro, and Marshall Doll and his wife Judy of Greenwood; brother, Charles Davis of Apollo, PA; four grandchildren Robin Doll (Rey Ting), Jeff Barnette, Angela Michaels (Mike), and Clinton Doll (Stephanie); seven great-grandchildren C.J. Miracle (Lexie), Rey Ting Jr., Alania Ting, Derek Doll, Dustin Weekley, Ashley Weekley and Mikey Michaels; three great-great-grandchildren, Christopher, Keara and Thomas Miracle; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward George Doll in 1952; brother, Clayton Davis; a sister Maxine Cottrill; and a son-in-law, John Barnette. Funeral services will be Wednesday 11 a.m. at the McCullough-Rogers Funeral Home in Pennsboro with the Reverend Randy Stewart and Evangelist Luke Weekley officiating. Interment will follow at the Wilbur Cemetery, Tyler County. Claude Herman Haught Claude Herman Haught, 87, of Alma departed this life Sunday January 3, 2010 in Louis A. Johnson V.A. Medical Center, Clarksburg, WV. He was born at Wilbur, September 13, 1922 a son of the late Delbert Lawrence and Leota Fay Gibson Haught. Claude was a United States Army Veteran a farmer and a member of the Tyler City Pentecostal Church of God, Tyler. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son Heubert Charles Haught. Three brothers; Ermal, Dick and Perry Haught. Two sisters; Opal Wilcox and Mabel Haught. Claude is survived by his wife Mabel Edith Dawson Haught. Five sons; Herman Haught and his wife Betty, Middlebourne, Larry L. Haught, Sr. And his wife Doris, New Martinsville, Landis Haught and his wife Christine, Soddy Daisy, TN, Harman Haught and his wife Ruth Ann, Paden City and Danny Haught and his wife Regina, Alma. Three brothers; Ray Haught, Wilbur, Jim Haught, Dorset, OH and Tom Haught, Chester, WV. Four sisters; Virginia Hickman, Ashtabula, OH, Melba Ash, Dale, WV, Hazel Friend, Akron, OH and Wanda Keys, West Union. Twelve grandchildren, Thirteen great grandchildren and a great great granddaughter. Troy Pratt Tray Pratt, 87, of Weirton, passed away Monday, August, 17, 2009 in the Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA. Born May 21, 1922 in Wilbur, WV he was a son of the late Alta and Gay Seckman Pratt. He was also preceded in death by his first wife Edith Carpenter Pratt on August 14, 1945 and brothers Russell and Homer Pratt. In 1975, with 32 years of service, Mr. Pratt retired from Weirton Steel, having worked as a shipper for 25 years. Troy was a lifetime member of the Hancock County Sportsmen's Club, D.A.V. having served as Past Chairman, VFW, American Legion Post 10, Weirton Steel 25-Year Club, Beaver Valley Antique Club, IOOF and Weir Happy Wheels Campers. He helped build and was a very active member of the Oakland volunteer Fire Department. Over the years, Troy enjoyed hunting throughout the United States. He served as an Army Paratrooper during World Was II. Troy is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eileen Gittings Pratt of Weirton; daughters Linda Pratt and Mary Robinson and her husband Rick of Weirton and Carolyn Uhl and her husband Duane of West Union, WV; sisters Lucy Billiter of Paden city, WV and Betty Fiest of Elyria, OH; 9 grandchildren including Amy Durdick and her husband Matt, Travis and Kyle Robinson and Joey Pratt all of Weirton; 11 great-grandchildren including Haylie and Luke Burdick of Weirton and 7 great-great grandchildren. Friends will be received Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, where IOOF services will be held Wednesday evening. Gwalia Dawson Gwalia Dawson, 85, of Sistersville Center, formerly of Joseph's Mills departed this life Wednesday March 25, 2009 in the facility. She was born October 20, 1923 in Tyler County a daughter of the late Benjamin and Lulu Belle Wilcox Keys. Gwalia was a homemaker and a member of the Muddy Creek Church of Christ, Middlebourne. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Clate Roy Dawson. A brother William (Jim) Keys. A sister Geraldine Lowe. A grandson Gary Dean Jr. Dawson. Gwalia is survived by three sons; Roy Dawson and his wife Kay, Gary Dawson and his wife Rella all of Alma and Ronnie Dawson, Pennsboro. Two daughters; Linda Brookover and her husband Stephen, Pennsboro and Kathy Griffin and her husband Roger. Alma. A brother Lawrence (Bub) Keys, West Union. David Smith David Smith, 45, of Hubbard, Ohio, formerly of Wilbur, W.Va., departed this life Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, in Welland, Ontario, Canada. He was born Nov. 23, 1963, in Tyler County, the son of Faye Smith Davis. David was a truck driver for Yourga, in Wheatland, Pa., and a member of the Teamsters. He was a protestant. In addition to his mother, David is survived by his two sons, Brian Smith and his wife, Kara, of New Martinsville, W.Va., and Victor Smith of Persacola, Fla.; one daughter, Tricia Smith of New Martinsville, W.Va.; one brother; Mark Santiago of Ohio; two sisters, Judy Hoover of Hubbard and Tracy Nelson of Missouri; and two grandchildren, Donnivan Smith and Kaylee Leichiter. Mary Roberts Mary E. Roberts, 79, of Sistersville Center, formerly of Wilbur departed this life Wednesday October 22, 2008 in the facility. She was born in Atlanta, GA January 22, 1929 the daughter of the late John and Meriam Roberts. Mary was a member of the Alma Volunteer Fire Department and a volunteer for ASCS. She was an avid collector of antiques. She was a protestant. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers; John and Stanley Roberts. Mary is survived by her friend and companion Mary Kahler of Wilbur. There will be no visitation. Artie J. Weekley Artie J. Weekley, age 94, of Belmont, formerly of Wilbur, departed this life Tuesday, April 1, 2008, in Care Haven of Pleasants County, Belmont. She was born October 25, 1913, in Tyler County, a daughter of the late Jacob and Victoria White Smith. Artie was a former employee of Pratt and Whitney, Hartford, Conn., and Pure Ice Cream, Clarksburg. She was a member of Fairview Church, Wilbur. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glenver O. Weekley, who passed December 28, 1994; two brothers, Gale and Dale Smith; and sister, Gertrude Reed. Artie is survived by son, Lawrence R. Weekley of Wilbur; two grandsons, Daniel Weekley and wife, Amy, of Pasadena, Md. and Brian Weekley of Lynchburg, Va.; great-grandson, John Weekley at home; sister, Wanda Smith of Parkersburg; and sister-in-law, Rosa Smith of Florida. Jackie "Jake" Keys Jackie "Jake" Keys, 75, of Wilbur, W.Va., departed this life Sunday, April 15, 2007, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown. He was born Feb. 13, 1932, in Tyler County, a son of the late James Haskell and Mary Adeline Seckman Keys. Jack was a Marine and a retired U.S. Air Force veteran. He was also a retired employee of North American Coal Co., Powhatan Point, Ohio. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 6327, Sistersville, and American Legion Post 86, Paden City. He attended the Fairview Church, Wilbur. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James C. Keys. He is survived by his wife, Ok Nan Keys; a son, Jack David Keys of Pine Grove; four daughters, Patricia Willey and her husband, David, of Paden City, Kathy Rosa of Pine Grove, Carolyn Sue Walker and Sandra Blystone, both of Ohio; two sisters, Patricia Keys of New Martinsville and Brenda Ashely and her husband, Stephen, of Middlebourne; and several grandchildren. Chad C. James Chad C. James, 35, of Wilbur, WV., departed this lefe Saturday, March 24, 2007 at his residence. He was born in Washington Court House, Ohio, December 2, 1971, a son of the late Dewayne H. and Vickie Everheart James. Chad was an avid hunter and fisherman. He attended the Indian Creek Southern Baptist Church, Alma. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Philip James. Chad is survived by his daughter who he loved and adored, Brooke L. James, New Martinsville; three brothers, Todd James and his wife Kim, Wilbur, WV., Cody James, St. Marys, WV., and Chase Bartrug, St. Marys, WV., and a sister Danielle Bartrug, St. Marys, WV. Orval J. "Jack" Davis Orval J. "Jack" Davis, age 87, of Pennsboro, WV., departed this life on Tuesday, October 31, 2006, at Harrisville, WV., following and extended illness. Jack was born on Aught 23, 1919 at Wilbur in Tyler County, WV., the son of the late Luther and Lucy Bradford Davis. He retired from Colt Industries formerly Crucible Steel of Midland, PA., after thirty years of service. He was a graduate of Tyler County High School with the Class of 1938 and was a life member of both the Veterans of Foreign Wars of West Union, WV., and the 57th Bomb Wing. He was a 20 year volunteer for the Pennsboro Emergency Squad as a driver and enjoyed playing the fiddle for the musical group "The Nighthawks." He was a veteran of World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps serving as an airplane maintenance technician holding the rank of T/Sgt. while participating in action in Africa and Italy. He was a member of the Pennsboro United Methodist Church. He is survived by his loving and caring wife of 56 years, Roxie Dotson Davis and sisters, Madeline Williams, Accident, MD., formerly of Greenwood, WV., and Ester Ferrebee, Coraopolis, PA. In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by brothers, Denver and Delmer Davis. Funeral Services were at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, November 4, 2006, from the McCullough-Rogers Funeral Home, Pennsboro, WV., with interment in the Greenwood Cemetery at Greenwood, WV. Yoho A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006, in Oregon City Evangelical Church for George C. Yoho, who died Oct. 21 at age 76. Mr. Yoho was born Oct. 22, 1929, in Wilbur, W.Va.. He served in the Army during the Korean War and was a carpenter. He lived intermittently in Oregon city and Hemet, Calif., for more than 12 years. He married Marcia Pieper in 1999. Survivors include his wife; son, Ken; daughters, Sonia Inns and Lynn Yoho; stepsons, Dennis Law and Duane Law; stepdaughter, Sharon Greenway; brother, Kenneth; sisters, Lyvada Belich, Gladys Croppes and Sandy Taylor; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Ina Claire Tennant Ina Claire (WeeWee) Tennant, 68, of Powhatan Point, Ohio, died Friday, Feb, 10, 2006, at home. She was born July 22, 1937, in Tyler County, a daughter of the late Clyde and Retha Keys Seckman. She was a homemaker and a member of the Wilbur United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle Tennant, on Nov. 17, 2005; a brother, Gary Seckman; and a sister, Mary Janice Freeman. She is survived by sons, Randy Tennant, and his son, Joe, of South Carolina, Keith Tennant of Powhatan Point, and his daughter, Amanda, and son, Bradley, and Carl and Mary Beth Tennant of Powhatan, and their son, Ryan, and daughter, Annie; one daughter, Glenis Nicholson of Bellaire and her son, Joe; a great-granddaughter, Natalie; three brothers, Billy Seckman of Wilbur, W.Va., Dean Seckman of Pittsburgh and Patrick Seckman of Wilbur, and several nieces and nephews. Patrica Sue Dotson Patrica Sue Dotson of North Las Vegas, Nevada, died the last week of December, 2005. She was born in Wilbur, WV, the daughter of the late Avery and Clara (Hill) Doak. Mrs. Dotson was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Dotson and son Mark. She is survived by a daughter, Nanette Dotson; one sister, Peggy Tucker; and niece Sherry, all of Las Vegas.
Norma Smith-Pierpoint Feb. 17, 1925 - Dec. 5, 2005 Smith-Pierpoint, Norma Lea, 80, of Charlotte, Mich., passed from this life on December 5, 2005, at Eaton Community Hospice in Charlotte, Mich. She was formerly from Alma. Preceding her in death was her beloved son Mike Pierpoint and husband Paul "Dude" Pierpoint; her father, Berkley James Smith; mother, Elsie Jones-Smith; brothers, Walton E. Smith, Berkley "Short" Smith Jr., Marshall Smith; and sisters, Eloise Keller and Cork Rehberg. She is survived by sisters Virginia Dalrymple of Middlebourne and Hilda Cunningham of New Martinsville; brother Allen Smith of Alma; granddaughter, Angie Gonzulas; husband, Marc of Charlotte, Mich.; and two great-granddaughters, Morgan and Marrissa Gonzulas. There will be no services in West Virginia.
Stella Dean Jenkins Stella Dean Jenkins of Weirton, WV, died April 24, 2005. She was born in Central Station, WV, on August 25, 1932, the daughter of the late Walter and Hazel Dye Dillon. She was preceded in death by her husband James Jenkins, and a granddaughter Julie Lynn Jenkins. Surviving are three sons, Edward (Stacy) Jenkins, Dean (Jill) Jenkins, and Mark (Connie) Jenkins; one daughter, Holly Janeshek, all of Weirton; two brothers, William Frank (Audrey) Dillon of Weirton, and Gene of Wilbur, WV., and seven grandchildren. Berlin E. Williams Berlin E. Williams, 90, of Greenwood, WV., departed this life on Thursday, February 10, 2005, at Clarksburg, WV. Mr. Williams was born on August 3, 1914, at Wilbur in Tyler County, WV., to the late Parley S. and Edna E. Davis Williams. He was retired from Curcible(sic) Steel of Midland, PA., and was a veteran of World Was II with service in Europe. He held the coveted Combat Infantryman Badge and received the Purple Heart for wounds incurred during action in the Rhineland. He was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart of West Union, WV., and attend the Greenwood United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Fairview E.U.B. Church in Tyler County. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, M. Madeline Davis Williams; son and daughter-in-law, Wayne R. and Susan Williams, Terra Alta, WV.; brother, Leo Williams, Crystal Lake near West Union, WV.; sisters, Imogene Lynch, Crystal Lake near West Union, WV., Donna Staire, Canton, OH., and Pauline King, West Milton, OH.; son-in-law, Neil Jackson, Pennsboro, WV., grandchildren, Brian and Shawn Jackson, April Nadolson and Courtney Myers; and a great granddaughter, Amanda Grace Jaackson. Anna Lee McKinney Maine MAINE, Anna Lee McKinney, 75, of Porters Falls, W.Va., died Monday, February 7, 2005 in the New Martinsville Health Care Center, New Martinsville, W.Va. Anna was born October 19, 1929 in Wilbur, W.Va. the daughter of the late Harman and Hattie McGeorge McKinney. She was a Protestant by faith; and a member of the American Legion Axiliary(sic) Post 28 of New Martinsville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Donald Maine in 2004 and a brother, Densel McKinney. Surviving are three sons, Charles Hupp of New Martinsville, Bill Hupp0 and wife, Velma, of Reader, W.Va. and Tony Hupp and wife, Liz, of Porters Falls; three daughters, Sonja Thompson and husband, Marshall, of Georgia, Shirley Anderson and husband, Phil, of Pine Grove and Candy Blake and husband, Woody, of Porters Falls; two step-daughters, Debbie Wiley and husband, Phil, and Ida Lindner and husband, Curt, all of New Martinsville; two step-sons, Donnie Maine of New Matamoras and Elom Maine of Cameron, Ohio; 26 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. James C. Keys Sr. Ohioville -_James C. Keys Sr., 77, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, in his home. He was surrounded by his loving family. Born Oct. 25, 1927, in Wilbur, W.Va., a son of the late James Haskell and Mary Adeline Seckman Keys. A veteran of United States Army serving during World War II, Jim retired in 1982, after 38 years of service, from Crucible Steel Colt Industries, Midland. He was a member of United Steel Workers of America Local 1212, American Legion Post 481, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8186 and the American Yugo Slav Club all of Midland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jackie A. Keys, Oct. 8, 2004, and his son, William Keys in 1993. Surviving are daughters, Jamie L. Keys, Calcutta, Ohio and Karla Keys, West Virginia; sons, Dean Keys at home, James C. Keys Jr., Hopewell, Va.; four grandchildren including Jason Keys, Midland and Dawn Swigger, New Cumberland; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Jackie "Jake" Keys, Wilbur, W.Va.; and sisters, Pat Keys, Smiths Ferry, Pa. and Brenda Ashley, Middlebourne, W.Va. A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Fairview Church followed by interment services in Wilbur Cemetery in Alma with the Rev. Earl Fletcher officiating. Jim will be laid to rest with full military rites and honors by the Sistersville Honor Guard.
Nadine W. Whiteman Nadine W. Whiteman, 93 years old, of Weirton, WV, died on Saturday, September 4, 2004, at Weirton Geriatric Center in Weirton, WV. Mrs. Whiteman was born on December 21, 1910, in Wilbur, WV, to the late Ginnie Vansickle Weekley and the late Emerson Weekley. She was married to Brice Ellis Whiteman, who passed away in 1984. Mrs. Whiteman was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother, Conrad Weekley. She is survived by her niece, Helen McGlothien and her husband, Donald, of Dothen, AL; two great nieces and one great nephew. There will be no visitation. Services will be held at Chestnut Ridge Cemetery Chapel in Paris, PA, on Wednesday, September 8, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Kevin L. Bowers officiating. Gary L. Seckman Gary Lee Seckman, 58, of Adrian, Mich., died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at his home. He was born Nov. 6,, 1945, in McElroy District, W.Va., to Clyde and Retha (Keys) Seckman. Gary was a boiler operator for Delphi Manufacturing for 29 years. Gary is survived by two sons, Scott Seckman and Steven Seckman, both of Adrian; stepson, Robert Randolph of Grand Rapids, Mich; grandchildren, Courtney Reney and Peyton Kay Seckman, Alexis Elaine Cramer, Salone Christine Cramer and Gavin Wayne Cleland; three brothers, Robert Dean Seckman, Pat Seckman and Bill Seckman, all of West Virginia; and one sister, Weewee Tennant of West Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Furbee Funeral Home, Alma, W.Va, with the Rev. Earl Fletcher officiating. Burial will be in Wilbur Cemetery. Eugene S. Keys Salem─Eugene S. Keys, 61, of Salem died at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday, December 3, 2003, at United Hospital Center following an extended illness. He was born September 30, 1942, at Wilbur, Tyler County, the son of the late Ina Britton. Mr. Keys was never married. He had two great-caring friends, Pat and Bill Price of Salem, who gave him their personal care for three years. He was graduated from Doddridge County High School, Class of 1962, after which he went to work at Harvey's Glass Factory in Salem and worked at several other glass factories for many years. Mr. Keys was a Christian and was baptized on August 10, 1999, by Pastor David L. Carole, Sr. Friends may call at the Greathouse Funeral Home, Salem, Saturday from 6-9 p.p., where funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. Rev. Paul Flanigan and Rev. Opal Virginia Weekley Weekley, Opal V., 94, of East Liverpool, Ohio, formerly of Wilbur, W.Va., died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003 in the East Liverpool City Hospital. She was born in Tyler County, a daughter of the late John C. and Della Long Yoho. She was a homemaker and a member of the Wilbur Chapel Church and later attended the North Side Community Church, East Liverpool. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold J. Weekley Sr. in 1962; a son, Harold Weekley Jr.; and two brothers. She is survived by two sons, Roy A. (Rosa) Weekley of Punta Gorda, Fla. and Bradley E. (Shirley) Weekley of Tecumseh, Mich.; two daughters, Betty J. Postlewait of Pine Grove and Anna L. Griffin of Wellsville, Ohio; two brothers, Kesley Waggle and Everett Waggle of Mansfield, Ohio; two sisters, Bertha Arnett of New Martinsville, W.Va. and Catherine Kearns of Aliquippa, Pa.; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren. Marie M. Keys Mercer Mercer, Marie M. Keys, 86, of East Liverpool, Ohio, died at 10:25 a.m. July 1, 2003, at East Liverpool City Hospital following a one-month illness. Born in Wilbur, W.Va., April 20, 1917, daughter of the late Luther and Addie Ferguson Keys, she was a member of the Fairview Church in Wilbur. A homemaker, she lived most of her life in the tri-state area, moving to East Liverpool from Wilbur. Her husband, Herbert W. Mercer, whom she married Aug. 14, 1946, died Aug. 20, 1978. A son, Marshall Keys, and a grandson, Brent Keys, also preceded her in death; along with a sister, Meriam Stoneking, and an infant sister, Leatha Belle Keys. Four grandchildren, Herb Keys of Pittsburgh, Pa., Danny Keys of Sistersville, Luke Keys of Jacksonville, N.C., and Brian Keys of Columbia, Tenn., survive. Also surviving is a sister, Mabel "Edie" Maxwell of Middlebourne. There are two great-grandchildren. Jessica and Ashley Keys. Services were held at Furbee Funeral Home July 5, Rev. Granny spent her life's work at something she loved and did well. She was a "Gift Giver". She made cakes for all occasions, made holiday candies and crafted many other handmade gifts. Densel W. McKinney East Liverpool, OH-- Densel W. McKinney, 78, of Midway Lane died at 11:53 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he was admitted Nov. 11. He was born Feb. 2, 1922, in Wilbur, Tyler County, W.Va., a son of the late Harmon and Hattie McKinney. He lived in various locations in the Tyler County area. Growing up, he worked in his schools, as a farmhand and helped his family by carrying the mail while his father was ill with pneumonia, dropping out of high school to do this. He graduated in 1942 and was soon drafted into the U.S. Army, entering the service at Ft. Hayes in Columbus. He was assigned to the 120th Infantry Regiment of the 30th Infantry Division. He trained in Florida and Indiana before shipping overseas to prepare for the Normandy invasion. Landing at Omaha Beach three days after D-Day, he fought with his unit through the hedgerows in the campaigns of Normandy and Northern France. He later served as a train guard on supply trains headed for the front, and was assigned to a Special Services unit in Paris shortly before the end of the war. He returned to the United States in late 1945 as a Tec-5 and was mustered out of the Army at Ft. Meade, Maryland in 1946. Mr. McKinney earned the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantryman's Badge and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a recipient of the American Theater Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon, and he held the Expert Infantryman's Badge. Following World War II, Mr. McKinney attended the Clarksburg (W.Va.) Business College and settled in East Liverpool, where be began a career at Crucible Steel in Midland. He retired there in 1982. Mr. McKinney was active in veterans' affairs throughout his life in East Liverpool. He was a past commander and life member of American Legion Post 374, past 10th District Commander of the American Legion, past Chef D'Guerre of Voiture 273 of the Forty and Eight: a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 66 and Chapter 47 of the Disabled American Veterans. As a member of the Veterans City Council in the 1960's, he was active in the drive to establish the monument to East Liverpool residents killed in our wars which stands in front of City Hall. He also participated in the more recent dedication of the monument to the crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger on Challenger Drive. He was active as a member of the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group and Post 374's Color and Honor guards. He marched in several parades each year and provided a final honor to many members of his generation of veterans, and of younger veterans, as a member of the burial group. He was honorary chairman of the East Liverpool Veterans Day activities this fall. He also was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Riddle Masonic Lodge 315, Elks Lodge 258 and the East Liverpool Lions Club. His first wife Ruth A. Milne McKinney, whom he married Nov. 4, 1950, died July 29, 1992. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Galloway Wilson Deem McKinney, whom he married August 10, 1995; A daughter, Mrs. Robert (Mary Kay) Harrold of East Liverpool; a son, Michael W. McKinney of East Liverpool; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Allen ("Sid") Neverly of New Cumberland and Mrs. Jeff (Marsha) Watson of East Liverpool; three stepsons, James Reed of Portland, Ore., Dave Wilson of Robertsdale, Ala., and Jim Wilson of Summerdale, Ala; four sisters, Mrs. Ruth Mercer of Calcutta, Mrs. Pauline Greaver of West Union, W.Va., Mrs. Donald (Anna Lea) Maine of New Martinsville, W.Va., and Mrs. Kenneth (Eva Pearl) Pierpoint of Tiltonsville, Ohio; a brother, Harmon W. McKinney Jr. and his wife, Jenny, of Petersburg, W.Va; five grandchildren and 10 stepgrandchildren. The Rev. Dr. H. Gene Toot, pastor emeritus of Trinity Presbyterian Church, will conduct services at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Dawson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Columbiana County Memorial Park. Bert Birchfield Bert Birchfield, age, 65, of Titusville, Florida, formerly of Dwale, died Wednesday, July 12, in Florida. Born on December 31, 1934, in Wilbur, West Virginia, he was the son of the late James and Ethel Grand Birchfield. He was a retired carpenter superintendent, and Army veteran of Korean conflict, and a member of the Brush Arbor Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Jean Birchfield. Other survivors include one son, James K. Birchfield of San Diego, California; two daughters, Bonnie J. Freni of Winter Springs, Florida, Sandra Rosche of Titusville, Florida; two brothers, Danni K. Birchfield of Lavergne, Tennessee, Phillip Birchfield of Cheyenne, Wyoming; one sister, Anne Daniels of Montgomery, Alabama; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. funeral services were conducted Saturday, July 15, at noon, at the Brush Arbor Baptist Church, Orlando, Florida, with pastor Jerry Creel officiating. Franklin L. Mercer EAST LIVERPOOL -- Franklin Laverne Mercer, 74, of Highland Drive died at 11:51 a.m. Sunday, July 20, 1997, at City Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born in Wilbur, W.Va., July 28, 1922, a son of the late Lawrence and Fancy Weekley Mercer. A resident of East Liverpool since 1946, he was employed 33 years as a guide setter in the No. 1 Finishing Mill at the former Crucible Steel Co. before retirement. He served with the U.S. Army in the 30th Infantry Division in Europe during World War II. He participated in five major campaigns and was awarded the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Avenue United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6327 in Sistersville, W. Va., 30th Infantry Division Association, National Association of Civilian Conservation Corps Alumni, American Legion Post 374, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 47 and the Appaliachian Folk Music Club. He was an avid Bluegrass musician. He is survived by his wife, Ruth McKinney Mercer, whom he married April 24, 1943; a daughter, Carol Sullivan of Florida; two sons, Jeff Mercer and Donald Mercer of East Liverpool; two sisters, Anita Rogers of Weirton and Delores Rossi of Steubenville; a brother, Roger Mercer of Yuma, Ariz.; three granddaughters and two stepgranddaughters. Glenver O. Weekley ALMA - Glenver O. "Glen" Weekley, 81, of Wilbur, died Dec. 28, 1994 at Clarksburg Continuous Care Center, Clarksburg, after an extended illness. He was born in Camp, Doddridge County, a son of the late Albert and Almira Spencer Weekley. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a retired farmer. He was a member of Fairview Church, Wilbur. Surviving are his wife, Artie Smith Weekley; one son, Lawrence Weekley of Middlebourne; one brother, Carl Weekley of Deep Valley; and two grandsons, Daniel Weekley and Brian Weekley, both of Middlebourne. Clara I. Doak Clara I. Doak, 80 of Taylor Avenue, North Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Wilbur, died Monday Dec. 21, 1992 at Lake Mead Hospital, Las Vegas. She was born in McKim, Tyler County, a daughter of the late Lon and Etta Stewart Hill. She was a retired postmaster of Wilbur, and was a member of the Wilbur Senior Citizens and Wilbur Chapel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Avery J. Doak in 1979; three brothers; one sister; and grandson. Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Dotson and Mrs. E. B. (Peggy) Tucker, both of North Las Vegas; two half-brothers, Cecil Dawson of Charlestown and Emory Dawson of Parkersburg; two half sisters, Mabel Haught of Wilbur and June Goff of Webster Springs; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 29 at the Furbee Funeral Home, Middlebourne, with Rev. Earl Fletcher officiating. Interment followed in the Northview Mausoleum, New Martinsville.

Zetta F. Ash Zetta F. Ash, 59, of Alma, died Saturday, May 23, 1992 at the Americare Health Care Center, Salem. She was born in Tyler County, a daughter of the late James E. and Elsie Mercer Jenkins. She was preceded in death by one brother. Surviving are four sons, George Ash and Samuel Ash, both of Deep Valley, Ellis Ash of Smithfield, and Mathew Ash of Wilbur; four daughters, Frances Hurst of El Paso, Texas, Lynn Ferguson and Rith Shepherd, both of Joseph's Mills, and Dorothy George of St. Marys; two brothers, Carl Jenkins of New Cumberland, and Leason Jenkins of Weirton; one sister, Alice Haught of Chester; and 14 grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 26 at the Furbee Funeral Home, Alma, with the Rev. Louise Baker officiating. Interment followed in the Spring Hill Cemetery, Joseph's Mills.

She was a lifelong homemaker, and had been a member of the Shirley United Methodist Church, the McElroy Grange at Shirley, the National Grange, and the Shirley Homemakers Club. She is survived by one brother, Glenn Mercer of Parkersburg; four grandsons, James Pierce of Mount Pleasant, S.C., Jonathan George Pierce of Groveport, Ohio, Malcolm Pierce of Taylor, S.C., and Alfred Lee Cottrill of Central Station; 15 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Gladys Haymond ALMA - Gladys Haymond, 91, HCR74 Box 18, Wilbur, died Saturday at United Hospital Center in Clarksburg. She was the daughter of Arthur T. and Mary (should have read Mae) Grove Weekley. She was a member of the Wilbur Chapel Church. She is survived by three sisters, Clara Haught, Hanoverton, Ohio, Maude Stanley, Lisbon, Ohio, and Mabel Legerton, Lakeland, Fla.; and one grandson, David M. Haymond, Santa Barbara, Calif. Glen L. Hickman Glen L. Hickman, 74, of route 2, Pennsboro, Deep Valley Community, WV, died Sunday morning in the Americare-Salem Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, after an extended illness. He was born in Central Station in Doddridge County, WV, a son of the late Silas T. and Zelphia Davis Hickman. He had retired in 1972 after 22 years with the Union Carbide Corp. in Ashtabula, Ohio. He also was a farmer and member of Arnolds Creek Christian Church, Deep Valley. He is survived by his wife, Virginia N. Haught Hickman, one daughter, Mrs. Merle (Eva Mae) Gill of Ashtabula, Ohio, one sister, Beulah Moore of Akron, Ohio, two brothers, Arthur Hickman of Chardon, Ohio, and Frances C. Hickman of Berea, WV, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers. She was born August 23, 1898, in Tyler County, a daughter of the late Silas T. and Rhoda Davis McGeorge. She is survived by two sons, Denzil McKinney of East Liverpool, Ohio and Harmon McKinney, Jr., of Petersburg, W.Va.; four daughters, Ruth Mercer of East Liverpool; Pauline Greaver of West Union; Anna Lea Maine of Porters Falls, W.Va.; Eva Pearl Pierpoint of Tiltonsville, Ohio; a sister, Susie Griffin, of Wilbur; 25 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harmon McKinney, in 1980. She was a charter member of the Fairview United Methodist Church, Wilbur, where she served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. Friends will be received at the Furbee Funeral Home at Alma, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday. The service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Wilbur Chapel United Methodist Church, Wilbur, Rev. Isaac Dawson Isaac "Ike" Dawson, 84, of Rt. 1, Pennsboro, formerly of Hebron, died Thursday at the residence of his daughter. He was born in Ritchie County. He was involved in the oil and gas production industry, was a farmer and a life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 2381 of St. Marys. Surviving are three sons, Cecil Dawson of Charles Town, Emory Dawson of Parkersburg and Edward Dawson of Philippi; five daughters, Mrs. Mable Haught of Wilbur, Mrs. June Goff of Webster Springs, Mrs. Mary Hinds of Waveland, MS, Mrs. Alice Sloneker of Canton, OH, and Mrs. Betty Riggs of Pennsboro; a sister, Mrs. Golda Hamilton of Pennsboro; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Etta Stewart Hill Dawson; his second wife, Nora Jewell Dawson; a son, four brothers and three sisters. Services were held at 2pm

She was born Aug. 17, 1896, at Wilbur, a daughter of the late B. S. and Vilena Davis Ferguson. On Nov. 4, 1916, she married Luther C. Keys, who preceded her in death Dec. 7, 1955. Herbert W. Mercer Herbert W. Mercer, 64, of 836 Michigan Ave. died Sunday at 11:45 a.m. in City Hospital following a one-month illness. He was born June 25, 1914, in Wilbur, W. Va., a son of Lawrence Mercer and Fancie Weekley Mercer. Mr. Mercer moved to Midland in 1941 and began working for the Crucible Divisions of Colt Industries at Midland, where he was retired Dec. 1, 1976. He moved to East Liverpool in 1952. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Mercer served with the 54th infantry battalion in the 10th armored division in the European theater. He was a member of United Steel Workers Local 1212, American Legion Post 48 of Middlebourne, W.Va, and the United Methodist Church at Wilbur. Survivors include his widow, Marie M. Keys Mercer, to whom he was married Aug. 14, 1946; a stepson, Marshall Keys of Mount Pleasant, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. Luther (Anita) Rogers of Weirton and Mrs. James (Delores) Rossi of Steubenville; two brothers, Franklin Laverne Mercer of East Liverpool and Roger N. Mercer of Weirton, and three step-grandsons and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held Wednesday at ) (sic) p.m. from the Wilbur United Methodist Church, with the Rev. She was born in Wilbur, Tyler County, a daughter of the late W. E. (Cap) and Sarah Duckworth Doak. She and her husband formerly owned the Little Ritz at Greenwood for many years. She is survived by a brother, Avery Doak of Wilbur; and two nieces, Mrs. Patricia Dotson and Mrs. Peggy Jo Tucker of Las Vegas, Nev. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. D. (Bill) Wilfong; and by three brothers and two sisters. The funeral was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Rogers Funeral Home in Pennsboro, with the Rev. John Tenney officiating. William H. (Petty) Ash William H. Ash, 75, of Wilbur, died at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at his home following a lengthy illness. A son of the late Eli and Olive Underwood Ash, he was born Dec. 13, 1897, at Pratts Run, Tyler County. Survivors include: his widow, Nancy Stubbs Ash; one daughter, Mrs. Oletha Moore of Munhall, PA; four brothers, Henry L. of Alma, John W. of Alvy, C. Roy of Union and Z. at Sistersville General Hospital. She was born at Wilbur, Dec. 18,
1887, daughter of the late John M. and Cordelia Underwood Smith.

prededed in death by four brothers and three sisters. Surviving

Kenneth Cottrill Kenneth A. Cottrill, 59, a resident of Wilbur, W.Va., passed away at his home at 6:05 p.m., Wed., February 4. He was born Dec. 22, 1910, in Doddridge County, a son of the late Charles and Agnes Smith Cottrill. In 1945, he married Mabel E. Keys, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Kendra, at home; four sisters, Mrs. Ora (Bertha) Montgomery of West Union, Mrs. Charles (Lenora) Goddard and Mrs. Clifford (Ruth) Cochran, both of East Liverpool, Ohio, and Mrs. Robert (Nancy) Willis of St. Petersburg, Florida; three brothers, Smith of Dayton, Oh., Jacob C. of Pennsboro, and Charles D. Jr., of West Union, and an uncle, J. Corbitt Smith of West Union. One brother, Wayne, preceded him in death. Mr. Cottrill was an active member of the Fairview United Methodist Church, where he served on the church board of trustees and was also a trustee of the church parsonage. He was a member of Bricklayers Union No. 6, Parkersburg, the Tyler County Farm Bureau and was a former field deputy assessor for Tyler County. He was a veteran of World War II. Cleryl W. Gregg Cleryl W. Gregg, 65, of Josephs Mills, W.Va., died Thursday morning, January 8, at West Virginia University Medical Center, Morgantown. He was born Oct. 21, 1904, at Josephs Mills, son of Bert and Margaret Hill Gregg. He was employed as a teacher in Tyler County schools for 35 years, also owned and operated a farm. Surviving are his widow, Violet Weekley Gregg; one son, David C. Gregg of New Martinsville; one daughter, Mrs. Duane (Sandra Sue) Clark of Alma; two grandsons, and one aunt. Mary Frances Ferrebee Mrs. Ferrebee Dies At Wilbur Home, Was 100 Years Old Mrs. Mary Frances Ferrebee, 100, of Wilbur, died at 6 a.m. Monday, at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Verna Ash, with who she had resided for the past 26 years. She was born in Ritchie County, Sept. 25, 1868, a daughter of the late John T. and Lydia Jones Seders. She was married twice. She first married James Franklin Elefritz in 1895, who preceded her in death in 1916. In 1920, she married Andrew Ferrebee, also deceased. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Bricie Dixon of Wichita, Kansas, Mrs. Bessie McKelly of Canton, Ohio, and Mrs. Verna Ash of Wilbur; five sons, The Rev. LHoward Elefritz of Salem, Wade Elefritz of Williamstown, Boyd Elefritz of Delroy, O., Hugh Elefritz of Canton, O., and Chester Elefritz of Tarpon Springs, Florida; Two sisters, Mrs. Fay Nutter of Clarksburg, and Mrs. Cora Matheny of Wolf Summit; one brother, George Seders of Smithburg; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Dan Doak of Greenwood; three stepsons, Fred Ferrebee of Greenwood, Route, Erice Rerrebee of Pennsboro and Floyd Ferrebee of Akron, Ohio;28 grandchildren, 97 great-grandchildren and one great - great- grandson. She was a member of the First Church of God. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Wilbur Chapel Church with the Reverends L. G. Watts of Clarksburg and (unreadable). J. A. Cumberledge West UnionJames A. Cumberledge, 82, of Pratts Run, Tyler County, died Thursday at his store on Pratts Run. He was born Jan. 19, 1885, on Pratts run, the son of the late Samuel D. and Mary Ellen Brown Cumberledge. He is survived by his wife, Gaye Gaston Cumberledge; one daughter,, Mrs. Ruby E. Kester of Macedonia, Ohio; two sons, Jacob A. Cumberledge of Pratts Run and Daniel D. Cumberledge of Pittsburgh, Pa., and ten grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Lester Cumberledge on Aug. 5, 1931. He was the last surviving member of his family, being preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers. He attended the Fairview United Brethern Church. Mr. Cumberledge had been a merchant for 55 years. Funeral services will be held Sunday. --------------------- James A. Harold J. Weekley MIDDLEBOURNE - Harold James Weekley, 56, of Wilbur, died Sunday at 4 p.m. He was born in Wilbur, Dec. 7, 1905, a son of Arthur and Mae Grove Weekley. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Opal Yoho Weekley; two daughters, Mrs, Betty Postlewait of Pine Grove and Mrs. Anna Griffin of East Liverpool, Ohio; two sons, Roy and Bradley, both at home; one brother, Howard of Cleveland, Ohio; four sisters, Mrs. Gladys Haymond of Wilbur, Mrs. Maude Stanley of Smith Ferry, Pa., Mrs. Mabel Legerton of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Mrs. Clara Haught of Cleveland, Ohio; and five grandchildren. A son, Harold, preceded him in death. Mr. Weekley lived all of his life in the Wilbur community and was a member of the EUB Church. (January 14, 1962)
Berkley J. Smith Berkley J. Smith, age 82, a native of Wilbur, died Tuesday May 1 at Middlebourne. He was born at Wilbur on April 6, 1880, a son of Marshall and Cordelia Underwood Smith. Survivors include his wife, Elsie Jones Smith, five daughters and three sons, Mrs. Virginia Alleman of Parkersburg, Mrs, Eloise Keller and Mrs. Hilda Cunningham of Middlebourne, Mrs. Norma Pierpoint of Charlotte, Mich., Mrs. Cordelia McCollough of Dunde, Walton of Wilbur, Allan of Parkersburg and Berkley Jr., at home; three brothers J.M.L. of West Union, Wilbur Smith of Wilbur, Phillip of Alma and four sisters, Mrs. Anna Pratt of Akron, O., Mrs. Kersey Doak, and Miss Icie Smith of Wilbur and Mrs. Estella Williamson of Friendly. There are nineteen grandchildren. Mr. Smith was a well-known stockman and farmer. Funeral services were held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and Rev. Russell Crawford officiating. Burial was in the cemetery at Beechwood. (May 1, 1961)

Luther Clay Keys Luther Clay Keys, 63-year-old president of the Tyler County Court was killed in a railroad crossing mishap at Ellenboro. State Trooper J. H. Parsons said that the light truck was struck by a 16-car Baltimore and Ohio Railroad express train at a private road crossing leading to the site of a stock sale at Lamberton. The New York-to-St. Louis train carried wreckage of the truck for 1,600 feet along the tracks. Lamberton is just east of this little Ritchie County community. Keys was born May 6, 1892, a son of Engle and Anna L. Keffer Keys. In 1916, he married Addie Ferguson, who survives with three daughters, Mrs. Marie Mercer, of East Liverpool, O.; Mrs. Meriam Stoneking, of Weirton, and Mrs. Mabel Edith Cottrill, of Camp; two brothers, C. C. Keys, of Clarksburg, and Oscar Keys, of West Bridgewater, Pa., and one sister, Mrs. Ona Bertholy, of Sandusky, O. There are four grandchildren Mr. Keys had lived in the Wilbur community for 35 years and was serving this second term as a county commissioner of Tyler County. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge at Wilbur and of the Fairview EUB Church for 40 years where he had served as the Sunday School superintendent for 20 years. He was a farmer and a livestock broker and was manager of the Ohio Valley Livestock Marketing Association, a co-op. Mr. Keys was a past president of the Tyler County Farm Bureau. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec 10 at 1 p.m. at the Fairview church at Wilbur with the Rev. E. E. Roush officiating. Burial was in the Wilbur cemetery. John Wilbur Grimm J. W. Grimm, 88, of Middlebourne, youngest man ever elected to an office in Tyler County, died on Sunday in Camden Clark Hospital in Parkersburg, following a short illness. Grimm, who served a term as Tyler County assessor and later served as sheriff also was the builder of the old Borland Springs hotel beyond Murphytown. He was elected assessor in 1888 at the age of 22, thus gaining the distinction of the county's youngest office holder. He was born in Lenardsville, PA, September 22, 1866, a son of the late H. G. and Malissa Lough Grimm. His family moved to Tyler County when he was one year old. Grimm was a 32nd degree Mason, a Shriner and a member of Knights Templar. He was the holder of a 50 year Masonic Pin. Grimm taught six years in Tyler County schools. He had attended Fairmont Normal, now Fairmont State College. In 1889 he operated a store and secured a post office at Wilbur, WV, a community named after him, his middle name being Wilbur. Grimm, a trustee and member of the building committee of the Middlebourne EUB Church, helped build two EUB Churches. He was also active in church work at Borland Springs. In 1905 he promoted the Peters Creek Cal Company, becoming secretary of the firm. He also promoted the Indian Creek Oil and Gas Company. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Harriett Spies Grimm at home; one son, Frank Chandis Grimm, retired lieutenant of Parkersburg Fire Department and one daughter, Mrs. W. H. Bills of Akron, Ohio. One son, Morris and one sister, Mallissa preceded him in death. (February 25, 1955) Martha J. (Pratt) Weekley Martha J. (Pratt) Weekley - Age 87, of Pennsboro, WV, has died. She was born 10 Sep 1861 at Wilbur, Tyler County, WV, the daughter of Charles and Elsie Wise David. She was married to Oliver P. Pratt and was later married to William W. Weekley. Both preceded her in death. She was a member of the United Brethren Church at Wilbur. She is survived by four sons: Playford Weekley of Industry, PA; O.C. Pratt of Pennsboro; and O.T. Pratt and O.E. Pratt, both of Weirton, WV. The funeral services were held from the United Brethren Church at Pennsboro. Interment in the Wilbur Cemetery, Tyler County, WV. Tyler County Journal - 28 Apr 1949 Robert Bruce Underwood Robert Bruce Underwood, 76, aged and respected citizen of Wilbur, died last Thursday night in a Clarksburg hospital. Death resulted from a fractured hip he received a few weeks ago in a fall at the home of his son Hesie Underwood, in West Union. Mr. Underwood was the son of the late John and Sarah Orr Underwood, citizens of the Wilbur section, where the deceased was born, reared, and spent his entire life. He was a well known citizen who was respected by all his acquaintances. He married Miss Jennie Weekley, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaiah Weekley, citizens of the same section of the county. His wife preceded him in death nearly twelve years ago. He is survived by the following children: Hanson, Wilbur; Homer, Camp; Hesie, West Union. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Wilbur United Brethren church in charge of Rev. E. E. Roush pastor of the church there, where the deceased had been a member for many years. William Weekley William Weekley, aged citizen of West Union, passed away at his home there on Monday of this week, aged 80 years. The deceased was well known to the citizens of the upper section of this county, having resided in the Wilbur section a number of years ago. He was well known to a number of the older citizens of this town where he visited during the past summer. The body was brought to the Fairview church near Wilbur on Wednesday afternoon where funeral services were held. Following the service at the church, burial was made in the Wilbur cemetery. (From front page of the Tyler Star News April 20, 1933) Arthur Tillman Weekley Centerville district and Tyler county suffered the loss of one of their best citizens Wednesday night, July15 in the passing of Tillman Weekley, which took place at this home on Wilbur ridge after a lingering illness. Besides the other illness of Mr. Weekley he has been affected with an eye affliction which had left him totally blind. He was born in Centerville district and was a son of the late Zane and Susan Vansickle Weekley. His family was one of the old families of this section of Tyler county and had been prominent in the affairs of the county for many years. All his life had been spent in the Wilbur section. He was married as a young man to Miss May (Mae) Grove, a member of another old Tyler county family. To this union of Mr. and Mrs. Weekley was born nine children, six of whom survive, as follows: Mrs. William Haymond, Howard and Mabel Weekley, Cleveland, Ohio; Mrs. Earl Keys, Wilbur, and Harold and Clara Weekley at home. He is also survived by the following brother and sisters; William Weekley, Wilbur, Mrs. T. U. Grove, Mrs. Lura Bonner, and Mrs. Ethel Riggs, Josephs Mills, and Mrs. Stella Sook (Suck), Salem, W. Va. Funeral services were held at the Wilbur United Brethern Church of which the deceased had been a member for many years, Friday afternoon in charge of Rev. F. G. Radabaugh, minister in charge of the Wilbur work. A large number of relatives and friends gathered on the occasion to show the respect in which their friend and neighbor was held in the community. Burial was made in the Wilbur Cemetery following the funeral services. (July 15, 1931)
Elizabeth Pratt Funeral Services of Mrs. Elizabeth Pratt Held Last Saturday. Funeral services were held at the Wilbur Church Saturday, May 9 for Mrs. Elizabeth Pratt, aged and respected citizen of the Camp Mistake section of Doddridge County, near Camp. Her death followed a lingering illness and was the result of a complication of diseases. The deceased was a former well known citizen of the Pratts Run section of McElroy district and she was the mother of former Assessor A. E. Pratt of Deep Valley. She was born in Maryland and come with her parents to this county while she was a child, the family making its home near the mouth of Arnolds Creek. In young womanhood she was married to Thomas Pratt, a member of the large Pratt family that resided in the Wilbur section of this county. To the union of Mr. and Mrs. Pratt were born eight sons, Walter A. and Austin E., both deceased, Clinton of Crosscut, Tex; Arthur, Murphysboro, Ill.; Emery of Camp; Lawrence of Coachilla, Calif.; and Edward and Bert of Salem, Oregon. The husband and father passed away a number of years ago. In addition to the surviving children, she is survived by seven grandchildren. Mrs. Pratt had been an active member of the United Brethern church at Wilbur during practically all her adult life. She was past 82 years of age at the time of her death, and more than sixty of those years had been spent in active church service. She was not content to be only a nominal member of the church, but the weight of her influence and support at all times was for the uplifting and betterment of her fellow men. She was left a widow in comparative young womanhood with eight boys to guide and rear. She had lived to see all come to manhood, honorable and honored in the communities in which they lived. Austin Pratt, one of her sons, was twice elected to the office of assessor in Tyler County. The funeral services at the church were in charge of her pastor, Rev. F. G. Radabaugh, who had known her well and had known her worth in the community. In the funeral address he paid a fine tribute to womanhood and motherhood, pointing to the deceased as a notable example of both in the community in which she had lived. Died May 6, 1931 at Camp Mistake, WV. Buried at Wilbur.
Leah Weekley Leah Weekley - wife of Isaac Weekley, died last week at the home of her son at Shirley, WV. She was 92 years old. She had spent her entire life in the Shirley-Wilbur area. She was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Weekley. She is survived by a son, U.G. Weekley at Shirley, and a daughter, Mary Baker of Alvy, WV. Children Martin and Mrs. Nancy Dye, preceded her in death. She was a member of the United Brethren Church. Funeral services were held at her home. Interment was in the family lot. William Washington Pratt W. W. Pratt died at his home at Camp, Friday, June 3rd, 1927, aged 87 years, 1 month and 11 days, from ailments incident to old age. He was born in Tyler county, then Virginia, near Shirley, April 22, 1840 and lived all his life in Tyler county. He and Ethelinda Weekly were united in marriage and 9 children were born unto them, 6 of who preceded him in death. Three survive him. Norval and W. R. Pratt of Camp and Mrs. Lepta Scott of Adamston. He is also survived by his wife. He was a member of the United Brethern church for many years. The funeral services were held at Wilbur Chapel, Sunday, June 5, 1927, by Rev. Collins of the Wilbur U. B. Church and the interment in the cemetery by the church.
